I don't agree necessarily. Some large companies have fostered a culture of internal entrepreneurship that make amazing breakthroughs. How many web startups have you seen that are doing "me too" products/sites.
What many forget is that there are also lots more start-ups. And no one even hears about the ones that fail. It is not that start-ups are better at innovation than large companies, it is that pretty much all they do is innovate. If they hit, we hear, if they fail, no one (except the newly non-billionaires) cares.
Big companies can have a two prong strategy. Incrementally improve their existing products, and acquire promising startups with disruptive innovative stuff.
It is cheaper to buy a promising startup for $50M then to spend $400M trying 10 things that will not pan out.
You are right we only read about the successes, not the failures. That is true for internal entrepreneurship at big companies too.

Also, one of my all time favorites is "Innovate or Imitate...Fame or Fortune" that details how early innovators many times are eclipsed by fast followers.
